Aldus Manutius: The Struggle and the Dream

8 January - 22 February 2015, Proscholium, Bodleian Library (Broad St, Oxford OX1 3BG)

Curated by Oren Margolis

Aldus Manutius (c. 1450–1515) is a towering figure in the history of the book. He and his partners established the Aldine Press in Venice and his legacy includes the italic type, a number of first editions, and his trademark pocket-sized octavo volumes of classical Greek and Latin texts. This display to mark the 500th anniversary of his death tells the story of Aldus's remarkable career through books held in the Bodleian.

This display is the centrepiece of a series of Aldine events in Oxford this winter. It also benefits from the work of student curatorial assistants whose own one-day display will be shown in the Proscholium on 6 February 2015.

On 6 February (5.30pm-6.30pm), at the Convocation House in the Old Bodleian Library, Oren Margolis discusses the mysterious Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, the exquisitely illustrated Renaissance book published in Venice by Aldus Manutius. Reception following hosted by the Centre for the Study of the Book and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Neo-Latin Studies.
