Arndes compare a Perugia nel 1478, col nome di “Stefan Aquile de Alamania” nel contratto di costituzione di una società finalizzata alla fusione di caratteri e costituita con lo stampatore Iohannes Iohannis de Augusta. Nel 1480, questa volta citato come “magister Stefanus Iannis de Aquila de Saxonia”, costituisce una società di stampa con due studenti sassoni, Levo Leve e Theodoricus Tzenen. La sua prima edizione è il De componendis versibus hexametro et pentametro di Francesco Maturanzio, datata 16 giugno 1481, dove lo stampatore si sottoscrive Stephanus Arnes Ancisburgiensis. Nel corso dello stesso anno egli sottoscrive altre tre edizioni, due da solo e una insieme a Gerhardus Thome e Paulus Mechter, con i quali pubblica, l'anno seguente, una celebre edizione illustrata. A lui è pure attribuita la stampa di una grammatica di Guarino, impressa “apud Sanctam Maria de Marcato” pure nel 1481. Sono attribuite infine ad Arndes, sulla base dell'esame dei presenza di Arndes a Perugia non si hanno altre testimonianze esplicite successive al 1482, mentre il suo nome riappare a Lubecca nel 1487. Qui Arndes opera fino al 1516 poi il figlio, in qualità di erede, appare associato al suo nome; compare con questa formula un celebre almanacco stampato nel 1519; nello stesso anno 1519 il nome di Arndes compare per l'ultima volta nei registri delle tasse comunali.$sGiocondo Ricciarelli: I prototipografi in Perugia.
