Field Definition and Scope

This field contains a brief mention of a reference work (bibliography, catalogue etc.) where a person, corporate entity or place has been cited or described (see field 290). Alternatively a short title of a work, whose imprint is the source for a record, may be cited here (refer to field 291).

Most important this field carries one or more abbreviations by which it is cited in records of imprint places, imprint names, corporate names or personal names. Refer to field 290 in such records for the work cited there in abbreviated form. The same abbreviations can be used in subfield $s in tags 300, 4XX and 5XX.

Indicator 1: Specifies the bibliographic format

  • # The bibliographic data is in ISBD format.
  • 9 The bibliographic data is not in ISBD format.

Indicator 2: Specifies the type of input:

  • 0 Field has been input or corrected by cataloguer and cannot be overwritten in automated updating processes
  • 1 Field has been input by automated addition; review by cataloguer may be necessary

If indicator 1 holds a blank, use ISBD punctuation within this field.

$c Abbreviations used to refer to this work (A;R)
This abbreviation will occur in other CT records (fields 290 or 291, and subfield $s in other tags).

$d Place of publication (O;NR)
If indicator 1 holds a blank, use ISBD punctuation within this subfield.

$e Date of publication (O;NR)

$f Statement of responsibility, entry element (O;R)
Author, editor, etc. Repeat subfields $f, $g for each author etc.

$g Statement of responsibility, parts of name other than entry element (O;R)
This subfield must be preceded by a subfield $f.

$h Number and name of a part (O;R)

$i Edition statement (O;NR)
If indicator 1 holds a blank, use ISBD punctuation within this subfield.

$j Host item (O;NR)
If indicator 1 holds a blank, use ISBD punctuation within this subfield,
but omit the introductory phrase “In: ”.

$p Physical description, extent of item (O;NR)
If indicator 1 holds a blank, use ISBD punctuation within this subfield.

$s Series statement (O;R)
If indicator 1 holds a blank, use ISBD punctuation within this subfield, but omit the parentheses at the subfield boundaries.
